Tip #1: Don’t let ‘the perfect’ be the enemy of ‘the good’
The idea of work-life balance might conjure images of waking up a 10 a.m., working from a hip coffee shop, getting a workout in, and going out for cocktails around 5 p.m. However, you still have to work and deliver results.
Instead of chasing some fantasy work-life balance, strive for a realistic one. If you have a flexible schedule, you might be able to come in late, but that means staying late – or putting in time on the weekend. If you need to take your kids to softball practice at 4 p.m., you might have to work on a laptop while they catch fly balls.
The key is to look for work-life opportunities and jump on them when they come up, not chase a fantasy lifestyle.

Tip #2: Keep wellbeing in mind
Not having a rigid schedule is a blessing and a curse. It means you can easily find yourself up and working at 4:30 a.m. because your thoughts keep turning to work. You can also find yourself playing catchup on a Saturday, while everyone around you is getting in some much-needed relaxation.
If you do have flexible working arrangements, it’s important to listen to your body, maintain a healthy sleep schedule and a healthy diet. Don’t be afraid to put down the smartphone, close the laptop and de-stress as often as possible.

If you hate your job, no amount of flexibility is going to make you feel better about it. Furthermore, an unfulfilling or stressful job will affect your personal life, completely undercutting the entire reason you want a better work-life balance.

On the other hand, you don’t want constant connectivity to keep you from family, friends, appointments and hobbies. You likely wanted a better work-life balance to do more personal things, so don’t put them off because you feel obligated to your career.
